Photography News that's Fit to Blog (This Week)
by Kerry Raminiak

Happy June 1st everyone! (Can you believe the year is half over?!?)

Some random facts about June:

* Named after the Roman Goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter, whom was the goddess of love and marriage. Many attribute this to June also being known as “wedding month.” To commemorate, here is a link to the 20 Worst Wedding Photos from Bridal Buzz.

* In both common and leap years, no other month begins on the same day of the week as June.

* In no other month can we say that the major DARKROOM price slash is ending. Actually, we extended it one month to include the month on June. Learn more here.

Now some headlines:

I recently discovered this blog from Amherst Media promoting a number of their photography books. I like that their agenda is clear while they offer great advice and advanced refreshers in each post based on a book they are promoting. This week they offer tips on how to pose hands during portrait shots. Last week they took a look at facial analysis.

The Onion introduced "Netpix," their parody of photo services that is “so convenient… you get a photo in your mailbox, look at it for a while, and then drop it in the prepaid envelop and send it back.” The premise is that subscribers will be able to receive up to three pictures as a time, from a wide array of genres, for a monthly fee. Genres include family photos, sunsets, crime scenes, the complete works of Ansel Adams, snapshots of Carol and her dog, and more. (If you are not familiar with The Onion, keep in mind that most headlines are not appropriate for kids or co-workers… but still pretty funny.)

The Sony World Photography Awards are now open for entries for both amateur and professional photographers. The competition for professional photographers incorporates 12 categories across three genres – commercial, fine art and photojournalism/documentary. The overall winner will take the coveted L’Iris D’Or title together with $25,000 (USD) along with Sony camera equipment. The 36 category finalists will then be exhibited in galleries across the world as part of the Sony World Photography Awards Global Tour throughout 2010 and 2011. Last year, the Sony World Photography Awards was one, if not the, largest award events attracting over 60,000 entrants from 139 countries. (Source: GTVone Photography)

We are hosting a contest in June if you can (Twitter) Tweet or post on the (Facebook) Fan Wall your best advice on selling digital slideshows. Any valid tip is entered to win. Here is a link to the terms and conditions. Good luck!
